The digital nomad lifestyle: Exploring Questions and Insights from a mindset perspective
The digital nomad lifestyle has garnered much attention in recent times, largely due to the captivating images and videos shared by influencers showcasing picturesque destinations. As someone who embraces this lifestyle, here are some of my insights into some commonly asked questions surrounding the choice to become a digital nomad.
In saying that, I acknowledge that some don’t choose this lifestyle, it’s a necessity … for me it’s been a combination of these. Due to the C-19 lock-down period here in Australia I was fortunate enough to remain employed at 2 jobs for much of that period, however, then the industries I worked in were impacted by the government mandates … these being mental health and disability employment. I believe in personal choice and there are many who lost employment due to the same thing ... so by no means am I unique in this respect.
Q1: What does it mean to be a digital nomad?
A1: At its core, a digital nomad is a person who constantly moves from one place to another while leveraging digital technology to sustain their work and income. The term "nomad" traditionally referred to someone who wandered, but in the modern context, it embodies individuals who have the freedom to work remotely and choose their locations.
Personally, it’s about having the freedom to work remotely doing what I am on this planet to do and provide a different perspective and alternatives for self and business development, health, relationships and mental health for those who’ve been in similar situations such as business owners, entrepreneurs and young parents amongst others who are seeking rapid transformations by someone who understands, because I’ve been there.
Q2: How has the perception of nomadism evolved?
A2: The labels associated with being a nomad have evolved over time. In previous centuries, terms like migrant, pilgrim, and vagabond were used, often carrying negative connotations. In contemporary times, the labels have shifted to reflect the diversity of this lifestyle, including Backpacker, Digital Nomad, Bus lifers, Truck life, and Van life. The rise in popularity can be attributed to the convenience of working remotely and the independence of self-reliant business owners. Then there is the “influencer effect” with many posting ‘inspo images’ on social media platforms.
Q3: What benefits does the digital nomad lifestyle offer?
A3: The digital nomad lifestyle presents a range of benefits. It allows for work-life integration, enabling professionals to design their schedules and negotiate their time between work and leisure. This lifestyle also encourages self-development as individuals must adapt to new environments, cultures, and challenges quite quickly. Adaptability and Resilience are also fostered to be able to navigate the many small decisions like where to park for the night, will it be safe, is it permitted, where to get water or dump the grey & black tanks. Additionally, the freedom to choose locations offers opportunities not just for business but also for rapid personal growth and exploration.
Q4: How do you prioritize health and mental well-being as a nomad?
A4: Prioritizing health and mental well-being is crucial for anyone, especially digital nomads. Traveling frequently can lead to disrupted routines, so I focus on creating healthy habits that can be maintained on the road. Regular exercise and stretching, balanced nutrition, and quality sleep are non-negotiables. Additionally, I tap into my expertise as an intuitive coach and hypnotherapist to support my mental health journey.
Q5: What resources are available for Digital Nomads to access health and mental health support?
A5: There are quite a few online mental health resources that are readily accessible, even for digital nomads on the move. In Australia and beyond, numerous platforms offer counselling, therapy, and coaching services virtually. Whether seeking assistance from an intuitive coach or connecting with online mental health communities, digital nomads can prioritize their well-being from anywhere, and it’s easier than ever. It’s important to find someone you resonate with and feel comfortable talking about topics that are typically uncomfortable or too personal to talk about with just anyone. There are also many types of therapy and coaching available, so it really is a case of researching and talking to different therapist until you find the right one.
A great therapist will always tell you if they don’t think they are the right fit for you or don’t have specific expertise or experience with the topic you’re wanting to resolve, and potentially refer you to a therapist or coach could be a better fit for your circumstances.
Q6: How does being a digital nomad and business owner impact the nomadic lifestyle?
A6: Being a business owner aligns well with the nomadic lifestyle. Entrepreneurial ventures that can be managed remotely provide the flexibility to explore new places while maintaining work responsibilities. As a business owner, I'm always learning and understand the importance of effective sales & marketing, data insights & analysis, delegating tasks, streamline operations, and leveraging technology to keep on top of ‘all the things’ and create a thriving business at the same time as exploring my corner of the world.
Q7: What role does intuition play in the life of a digital nomad?
A7: Intuition becomes a valuable compass in the nomadic journey. Using all your senses to judge whether to stay or move on from a specific area or general location is a prime example. Adapting to new environments, making quick decisions, and navigating unfamiliar territories are common aspects of a nomadic lifestyle. Trusting one's intuition can help make informed choices and foster a sense of self-confidence in this dynamic way of living.
This is certainly not the ideal lifestyle for you if you’re resistant to change, however, fear of change is quite common and typically learned through a fearful parent or caregiver early in life. However, fear of change can be overcome and I encourage you to give it a try.
Q8: How can nomads find a sense of community and support?
A8: Finding community as a nomad is essential for combatting potential feelings of isolation. There are so many who’ve said it was surprising that they found more connection and community while travelling than the years they lived in city apartments or suburbia.
There are online platforms, social media groups, and meetups specifically cater to digital nomads in many countries. I would say that Australia is in the early stages of establishing these but the momentum and interest in certainly increasing. Additionally, seeking out people who’ve made the leap themselves and become nomadic coaches who specialize in providing guidance and support to individuals navigating this lifestyle can offer valuable insights and connections. There’s also a great knowledge base out there, and Aussie’s are super helpful particularly those of us who are nomadic or regular travellers. Many of the truckers here in Australia love this type of lifestyle … they’re not exactly digital nomads but they’re working travellers and industry would be significantly effected without them in the many remote and rural locations we have in this country.
I hope this has answered a few of your questions from a different perspective about the digital nomad lifestyle. It offers a unique blend of adventure, flexibility, and challenges. By prioritizing health, mental well-being, and self-development, while leveraging technology and other available resources, and most importantly trusting your intuition, solo-travellers, couples and families can thrive as both entrepreneurs and nomads.
Enjoy the journey!
